The Design Process

Client feedback is the cornerstone of our design process and typically the more time that is spent working through the details of design, the less decision making is needed during the implementation stage, and the more spectacular the finished product will be.

Our experienced design team works directly with each client to ensure their wants and needs are fully incorporated into the design process from the beginning. Through the use of a client-needs checklist, carefully updated and refined over more than 20 years, and an equally refined ability to listen and understand what our clients have to say, Outdoor Kitchens & Patios ensures that our clients are truly our partners throughout this all-important first step in the creation or redevelopment of any outdoor living space.

Depending on the time of year and the relative complexity of the project, clients should expect to meet with their designer once or twice weekly. Simple projects can then take as little as a few weeks to design while more complex projects can take significantly longer to architect. Then once implementation begins, recurring communication is maintained between our clients and the design team to ensure that each stage of the project is completed to everyone’s satisfaction before moving ahead with the next phase.

Who needs design work for their project?

Everyone planning to make changes to their property should be doing some preconstruction planning. Generally the higher the budget the greater the need for design work.

There are plenty of smaller projects that our landscape design team is asked to look at each year that require nothing more than for the agreed concept to be drafted up, which then provides:

  • a scaled drawing for the construction crew to follow during implementation,
  • the ability to do a proper “take-off” or estimate of the materials required for the project, and
  • a legal document forming the basis for the work to be performed.

These smaller types of projects are generally valued under $10,000.00. Projects with higher values are usually well served by dedicating a small percentage of the construction budget to the design process. Moving things around on a computer screen is far less expensive than the alternative.

First Steps in Design

For the first meeting our clients are asked to have a copy of the property survey and a list of goals to be achieved.

For backyard living spaces, we will also want clear pictures of the location as well as details of the types and size of furniture you may wish to incorporate. Our designers will be able to immediately provide a rough outline of how these goals can be achieved given their knowledge of space and access requirements, building materials, local bylaws, building codes, grading and budget. They will also be able to better assess your design process requirements as not all clients require the same combination of design services.

Design Services

The Outdoor Kitchens & Patios team provides a wide variety of design services. The basic landscape design package (site analysis and base plan, hardscape design, and design presentation) can have à la carte design services added as required and a portion of the design fees can be redeemable against work carried out by our construction division.

Some of the additional services that can be added to the basic landscape design package include:

Pool and Spa Design

Pool design is no different from other aspects of landscape design in that it is critical to get the shape, size and location right. This ensures the pool will fit with the overall look and anticipated use of the space and that it meets the needs of the client. Designing and siting a pool typically requires several meetings as pools must be carefully integrated into the overall hardscape / landscape design. Pool design must be completed before moving ahead with any other landscape design work.

With pool design, the integration of elements such as spill over spa’s, water and flame features, sun shelves and custom staircases can be incorporated right from the earliest stages of planning.

Many landscape designers receive calls that go something like this: "Hi, we have just put a pool in our backyard and were wondering if you can do a landscape design for us?" The typical response from most landscapers is usually: "Thank you for asking, it sounds like you have already completed the design, I'm not sure if we can help you."

Outdoor Kitchen & Patio’s experienced designers are up to date on the latest materials, trends and styles, thereby giving our clients access to all the cutting-edge resources needed to create that new look or lifestyle they’ve been dreaming of.
